Uzdah Tower

Uzdah Tower, locally known as Uzdah Kula, is a historic ruin situated near the village of Dubravice in the Šibenik-Knin County of Croatia. This small round tower is the remaining fragment of a once modest castle, which played a part in the region's turbulent medieval and early modern history.

Historical background and strategic significance

The castle was originally constructed during the reign of Paul I Šubić of Bribir, a powerful Croatian nobleman, sometime between 1275 and 1312. This places the castle's origins firmly in the high medieval period, despite some sources suggesting a later renaissance date. The castle served as a fortified lookout and defensive position overseeing a valley road, strategically located at the end of an elongated hill.

Its position allowed control over the surrounding area, particularly the nearby town of Skradin. In 1522, the castle and Skradin fell to the Ottoman Turks during their expansion into Dalmatia. This marked a significant shift in control and the castle's role in regional defense.

Following the Ottoman retreat at the end of the 17th century, the castle lost its military importance. Subsequently, local inhabitants repurposed the castle's stone as a quarry for building materials, accelerating its decline into ruin.

Architectural features and current condition

The surviving structure is a small round tower, which likely formed the central keep or donjon of the original castle complex. It is believed that the tower was once surrounded by a fortified wall, enclosing a small courtyard or bailey, although no significant remains of these walls survive today.

The tower was constructed at the tip of a narrow hill ridge, providing commanding views over the valley and the road below, an ideal vantage point for monitoring movement and defending against potential attackers.

Today, the tower stands in a ruined and rapidly deteriorating condition. The masonry is crumbling, and the structure is vulnerable to further decay. Despite this, it remains accessible to visitors who can reach it by a short walk through the surrounding woodland from a nearby playground located about 400 meters southeast.

Local legends and cultural significance

The name Uzdah Kula translates as the "Tower of Sighs", derived from a poignant local legend dating back to the Ottoman period. According to the tale, a young local couple was in love, but a Turkish soldier also desired the girl. The soldier died accidentally while spying on her, falling from a tree. The commander of the Ottoman troops blamed the villagers and imprisoned the boy in the tower.

As villagers passed the tower, they reportedly heard the boy's despairing sighs. The commander's wife, a local woman who had converted to Islam, remembered her roots and secretly aided the villagers in freeing the boy. After his release, the boy set fire to the tower and eventually married his beloved. This story has contributed to the tower's cultural resonance in the region.

Visiting uzdah tower

Uzdah Tower is freely accessible to the public and can be visited year-round. Although the site is modest and the ruins limited, it offers a glimpse into the region's medieval past and Ottoman-era history. The surrounding natural environment provides a peaceful setting for visitors interested in history and rural landscapes.

Visitors should be prepared for a walk through forested terrain to reach the tower, as it lies off the main roads. There are no visitor facilities on site, and the tower itself is not equipped for extensive exploration due to its fragile state.
