Turina Castle

Turina Castle, locally known as Utvrda Turina, is a historic fortress perched above the town of Skradin in the Šibenik-Knin County of Croatia. This site has a long history of strategic importance, first occupied as a prehistoric hill fort by the Liburnians, an ancient Illyrian tribe, on a rocky ridge nestled between two valleys near the Krka River.

The medieval castle was constructed during the rule of Paul I Šubić of Bribir, a powerful Croatian nobleman, between 1273 and 1312. The Šubić family, who held the title of bans of Croatia, established Skradin as their capital, fostering the town's growth which had roots going back to Roman times when it was known as Scardona. The castle served as a key defensive and administrative center during this period.

Historical context and ownership through centuries

Following the medieval Šubić era, Skradin and Turina Castle experienced significant political changes. From 1522 to 1684, the fortress fell under Ottoman rule, marking a period of military and cultural transformation. After the Ottoman retreat, the Republic of Venice took control of the area until 1794. Venetian rule introduced new architectural influences and maintained the castle's military function.
