Our mission
Castlopedia is an independent encyclopedia of castles and historic fortifications, created and run by two enthusiasts — Wojtek and Darek (meet them below). The project started as a personal passion for architecture and history and grew into a structured database covering thousands of fortifications across more than a hundred countries.
Castlopedia is dedicated to documenting, preserving, and sharing the rich history of castles and fortifications from around the globe. Our platform serves as a comprehensive resource for historians, tourists, and anyone fascinated by castle architecture, preservation, and world heritage.
From imposing European royal residences to defensive Asian fortresses, from Middle Eastern citadels to American colonial forts, castles tell the story of centuries of history, culture, and architectural evolution across civilizations. We believe these monuments deserve to be celebrated and accessible to everyone.

Editorial standards & data methodology
How we collect data
Our castle entries are compiled from publicly available sources: heritage registers, UNESCO listings, official castle and tourism websites, historical publications, and maps. Where possible we enrich entries with practical visitor information such as opening hours, ticket prices, and official website links, together with cited references. Community submissions add photos, corrections, and first-hand reports.
How content is created and verified
Draft descriptions may be prepared with the help of modern writing tools, but no entry is published automatically. Every page passes through a human editorial review by our team before it becomes visible, and entries that do not yet meet our quality bar stay unpublished until they are expanded and checked.
We prioritize depth over volume: a castle page is only indexed once it contains meaningful, verified information for the reader.
Corrections & sources
History is a living field and mistakes happen. Every castle page lists its authoritative sources — such as official websites or UNESCO records — so you can verify what you read. If you spot an error, use the contact form below or the contribute page; corrections are reviewed and applied promptly.
