Uncastillo Castle

Uncastillo Castle is a historic fortress located in the village of Uncastillo in the province of Zaragoza, within the autonomous community of Aragon, Spain. This castle occupies a commanding position atop a large, flat rock known as Ayllón, which rises sharply with vertical sides, providing a natural defensive advantage. The rock's flat summit, an irregular oval approximately 115 by 75 meters in size, covers around 6600 square meters and serves as the foundation for the castle's remains.

Early history and strategic importance

The site of Uncastillo Castle has origins dating back to the 10th or 11th century, when it was first documented as a Muslim fortification under the name Unuh Qastil in the year 921. This early fortification played a significant role in the frontier dynamics of the Iberian Peninsula during the period of the Reconquista. In 1033, the castle was incorporated into the Kingdom of Aragon, becoming known as Unum Castrum. From this point, it functioned as an important border fortress, guarding the Aragonese lands against incursions from the neighboring Kingdom of Navarre.

Architectural features and layout

Originally, the castle was relatively primitive in design, centered around a single square keep measuring roughly 10 by 10 meters with three stories. This keep was positioned on the higher, smaller section of the rock summit, dominating the surrounding village and landscape. The summit was divided by a now-vanished wall into two main areas: a larger and a smaller enclosure. The smaller area, where the keep stands, was slightly elevated compared to the rest.

By the mid-14th century, around 1356, modifications were made to the castle's layout. The dividing wall was partially demolished to accommodate the construction of a small Gothic mansion. This mansion featured a rectangular ground plan and two stories, with the upper floor accessed via a spiral staircase housed in a small, octagonal tower. This addition reflected evolving architectural styles and the castle's adaptation from purely military to residential functions.

Decline and partial restoration

The castle's military significance waned after the 14th-century War of Succession, during which it suffered damage and partial dismantling. The outer walls were reduced, and both the original keep and the Gothic mansion fell into ruin. Despite this decline, the castle remains a prominent landmark in the village.

In the 20th century, efforts were made to partially reconstruct the keep, stabilizing its structure and preserving its historical character. Today, the keep houses a small museum that visitors can explore, and it is possible to climb to the top for panoramic views of the village and surrounding landscape. The Gothic mansion has also undergone partial restoration in recent years, allowing for a better appreciation of its architectural details.
