Torres dels Serrans

Torres dels Serrans, also known as the Serrans Gate or Serranos Towers, is a prominent example of Valencian Gothic architecture and one of the most significant surviving structures from the late medieval period in Valencia, Spain. Constructed between 1392 and 1398, these imposing towers originally formed part of the Christian Wall (Muralla cristiana), the defensive fortifications that enclosed the city during the 14th century. The gate served as a vital entrance and defensive bastion on the northern side of Valencia, exemplifying the military architecture of the time.

Historical context and significance

The Torres dels Serrans was built in the late medieval period when Valencia was a flourishing Mediterranean city under the Crown of Aragon. The construction of the gate was part of a broader effort to strengthen the city’s defenses against both external invasions and internal revolts. It was one of the twelve gates piercing the ancient city walls, which were essential for controlling access and trade as well as for military defense.

In the 16th century, the towers were adapted to serve as a prison for nobles, highlighting their continued use as a secure facility. This prison function persisted until the 19th century, when the walls were largely dismantled.
