Scharfenberg Castle

Scharfenberg Castle, located near Klipphausen, Germany, is a medieval castle ruin perched with commanding views over the Elbe valley. The castle has a rich history intertwined with both military significance and cultural influence, particularly during the Romantic period when it became a favored subject for numerous renowned artists.

Historical origins and early medieval context

While some local traditions link Scharfenberg Castle to Henry the Fowler and suggest a founding date as early as 938 AD, there is no archaeological or documentary evidence to support this claim. The earliest confirmed construction dates to around 1200, placing it firmly in the high medieval period. The castle was first documented in 1227 in a church record from Meissen, indicating its control by the Bishop of Meissen at that time.

Medieval architecture and layout

Archaeological excavations have uncovered remains of a circular keep dating from approximately 1220 on the western side of the castle, alongside sections of the western boundary walls and an entrance gate. These features reflect typical high medieval castle architecture designed for defense and control of the surrounding territory.

Ownership and military history

By the late 14th and early 15th centuries, the castle passed into the hands of the von Maltitz and then the von Miltitz families, who maintained ownership until the Second World War. The castle endured significant damage during the Thirty Years' War, necessitating reconstruction of large inner sections in the late 17th century.

Sieges and conflicts

In 1706, during the Great Nordic War, Scharfenberg Castle was besieged by Swedish forces but successfully defended, demonstrating its continued strategic importance. An accidental fire in 1783 destroyed the timber-built north side of the courtyard, though the timber south side survived.

Romantic period and artistic connections

During the early 19th century, Scharfenberg Castle became a popular destination on the Grand Tour, attracting artists and intellectuals drawn to its picturesque ruins and dramatic setting. The von Miltitz family were patrons of the arts, commissioning works from notable figures such as Ernst Ferdinand Oehme, Christian Gottfried Körner, Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, Johann August Apel, E. T. A. Hoffmann, Thomas Fearnley, Johan Christian Clausen Dahl, and Caspar David Friedrich.

Architectural alterations for romanticism

The castle's architecture was modified during this period to enhance its Romantic image, emphasizing its medieval character and scenic qualities. These changes helped solidify Scharfenberg as an emblematic site of Romanticism in the region.

20th-century history and modern use

Following the upheavals of the Second World War, the castle was vacated and subsequently used as a hostel for displaced persons under Soviet administration. Despite its size, its remote location made it unsuitable for housing workers long-term. In the 1960s, it opened as a museum, attracting primarily local visitors.

Artist community and civil defense

Throughout the mid-20th century, an artist community including Achim Freyer, Emil Nolde, Achim Heym, Andreas Reinhardt, Karl-Heinz Schäfer, and Otto Walchau became associated with the castle, working to preserve its cultural legacy. During the 1970s and 1980s, the castle served civil defense purposes, leveraging its strategic vantage over the River Elbe.

Post-reunification and current status

After German reunification in 1989, all state functions ceased, and the castle was sold into private ownership. Today, Scharfenberg Castle operates as a hotel, allowing visitors to experience its historic ambiance and panoramic views.
