This castle holds significant historical importance as a military stronghold and administrative center during the High Medieval period, particularly throughout the 13th century when it was first constructed.

Historical origins and military significance

The castle was commissioned in the early 13th century by Martín Martínez, the Grand Master of the Order of Calatrava. Its primary function was to secure the eastern boundaries of the Order's territory, acting as a defensive bulwark against the neighboring Order of Santiago, whose stronghold was Tocón Castle in Membrilla. This strategic positioning highlights the castle's role in the complex military and political landscape of medieval Spain, where religious military orders played key roles in territorial control.

The garrison of Pilas Bonas Castle was notably composed of knights from Biscay, including members of the noble Sagasti-Manzanares family. This connection was so influential that the settlement developing around the castle adopted the name Manzanares. The current name, Pilas Bonas, was mistakenly attributed to the castle in the early 19th century, diverging from its historical identity.

Administrative role and architectural evolution

From 1284 onward, Pilas Bonas Castle served as the headquarters of the Encomienda of Manzanares, under the governance of Blasco Núñez. Over subsequent centuries, the Order of Calatrava maintained ownership and undertook several renovations and reforms to adapt the castle to evolving military needs and residential functions.

The castle's architecture reflects its dual purpose as a fortress and a noble residence. Its defensive features likely included robust curtain walls, towers, and possibly a moat, typical of High Medieval military architecture in the region. The Ecclesiastical confiscations of Mendizábal in 1864 resulted in the castle passing into private ownership. Subsequently, the fortress was transformed into several private residences, marking a significant change from its original military function to a domestic and commercial use.

Today, Pilas Bonas Castle functions as a hotel, offering guests the unique experience of staying within a historic medieval fortress. While the castle's interior is accessible to hotel guests, public visiting hours may be limited, especially outside the tourist season.
