This network was designed to protect a critical twenty-kilometer stretch between Bibrka and Novi Strilyshcha, overseeing vital roadways and the Boberka river valley.

The tower’s role was dual: it functioned as both a defensive bastion against potential invaders and as an observation point to monitor movements along trade and military routes. This strategic positioning reflects the turbulent history of the region, which was frequently contested by various powers during the medieval period.

Local tradition connects the tower to the Senyavski family, a notable noble lineage in Galicia, suggesting it may have been part of their estate. Another legend associates the tower with a Basilian monastery, hinting at a possible religious dimension to its history. While these connections remain part of local folklore rather than confirmed historical fact, they underscore the tower’s cultural significance within the community.

Structural design and materials

The tower exhibits an almost square ground plan measuring approximately 8 by 7.5 meters and rises to a height of about 10 meters. Originally constructed as a four-story structure atop a basement level, it was designed to maximize defensive capabilities and provide a commanding view of the surrounding terrain.

Its walls are built primarily from irregular limestone blocks bonded with lime mortar, a common and practical construction technique in the region during the medieval period. The corners and door frames are accentuated with carefully shaped stone blocks, adding both structural strength and aesthetic refinement. The presence of Gothic-style pointed arches over door and gate openings indicates the influence of medieval European architectural styles.

Defensive elements and fortifications

The tower features narrow embrasures or arrow slits embedded in the walls, allowing defenders to fire arrows or firearms while remaining protected. The uppermost chamber beneath the roof, known as the battlemented podsybittya, contains a row of openings designed for downward defense, enabling defenders to repel attackers attempting to breach the tower’s base.

Notably, the northern and southern walls preserve grooves that once held gates framed by pointed arches. The southern wall faces a preserved moat, which has been reconstructed along with a drawbridge, emphasizing the tower’s role in controlling access and enhancing its defensive perimeter.

Along the exterior walls, sockets in the stone indicate the former presence of a wooden gallery, a platform where guards could patrol and defend the tower while shielded. This feature highlights the tower’s multifunctional design, combining observation, defense, and patrol capabilities.

By the 20th century, the tower had fallen into a state of ruin, reflecting centuries of exposure and neglect. Interest in its preservation was renewed in the early 1900s by groups such as the Eastern Galicia Conservators’ Group, founded in 1863, which sought to protect regional heritage sites.

In 1937, a Polish military pilot helped promote educational activities focused on the tower, raising public awareness of its historical importance. Later archaeological investigations in the 1980s, conducted by the Ukrzakhidproektrestavratsiya Institute and scholars from Leningrad, provided deeper insights. These studies suggested that the tower resembled the so-called "Volyn towers", a type of fortification dating to the second half of the 13th century, indicating architectural and historical links between the Volyn and Galicia regions.

Restoration efforts between 1990 and 1991 stabilized and conserved the structure, allowing it to serve as a tangible connection to the region’s medieval past. Since 1995, the tower has been maintained as part of the Museum of Defensive Architecture “Piatnychanska Tower”, affiliated with the Lviv Art Gallery. This status ensures ongoing preservation and public access, highlighting the tower’s cultural and historical value.
