Peralada Castle

Peralada Castle stands as a remarkable testament to the layered history of Catalonia in northeastern Spain. This medieval fortress and later Renaissance palace has evolved over centuries, reflecting the region's turbulent political past and rich cultural heritage. Located in the town of Peralada, the castle's origins date back to the early Middle Ages, with its first incarnation serving as the seat of the viscounts of Peralada. Over time, it has witnessed destruction, rebuilding, and transformation, becoming a symbol of noble power and artistic patronage.

The castle's strategic position just outside the medieval town walls on a gentle hill afforded it defensive advantages typical of a hill castle. Its architectural fabric showcases a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles, with significant modifications made in the 19th century that introduced French influences and landscaped gardens. Today, Peralada Castle is not only a historical monument but also a cultural hub, hosting a renowned music festival, a casino, and museums that celebrate its artistic and viticultural traditions.

Early history and medieval origins

The earliest records of Peralada Castle trace to the 9th century, when it was known as "castell Toló." It belonged to the Viscounts of Peralada, descendants of Berenguer, son of Count Ponç I of Empúries. This original fortress was situated within the defensive walls of the medieval town, serving as a pivotal center of power in the County of Peralada.

During the high medieval period, the castle was a focal point of regional authority. However, in 1285, it suffered complete destruction during a crusade against Catalonia led by King Philip III of France, also known as Philip the Bold. The French military campaign devastated the Empordà region, including the castle and surrounding buildings, which were set ablaze.

Reconstruction and gothic expansion

Following its destruction, the castle was rebuilt in the 14th century by the influential Rocabertí family. The new structure was erected outside the original town walls, marking a shift in the castle's defensive and residential functions. This phase introduced a Gothic-style palace within the castle complex, featuring architectural elements typical of the period such as pointed arches, tracery windows, and fortified towers.

Simultaneously, the Carmelite Order established a monastery and church adjacent to the castle, with the Gothic cloister constructed in the latter half of the 14th century. This religious complex was later expanded with galleries in the early 17th century, reflecting ongoing ecclesiastical importance and architectural development.

Renaissance and later modifications

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle and monastery underwent various restorations and enlargements. The castle's interior was refurbished in the 18th century, enhancing its residential comfort and aesthetic appeal. Around 1870, the last Rocabertí counts transformed the castle into a French-style palace, commissioning landscape architect François Duvilliers in 1877 to design an extensive park. This park originally planned for 158 plant species, now features 63 distinct landscaped zones, including a pond and a 19th-century bridge connecting to the Carmelite convent.

Historical significance and ownership

Throughout its history, Peralada Castle played roles in significant political and military events. In 1472, King John II seized the castle during the Remences War, a peasant uprising in Catalonia. The elevation of Viscount Francesc Jofre de Rocabertí to the title of Count of Peralada by King Philip III of Spain in 1599 underscored the family's prominence.

After the death of Tomàs de Rocabertí-Boixadors Dameto i de Verí in 1898, the castle was abandoned until its acquisition in 1923 by Miquel Mateu i Pla, a Catalan industrialist and banker. Mateu restored and expanded the castle, established a private art collection, and founded the Museu del Castell de Peralada. The castle also became home to the Peralada Music Festival, initiated by Carmen Mateu Quintana in 1987, and the Casino de Peralada, one of the first legalized casinos in post-Franco Spain.

Architectural features and layout

Peralada Castle occupies a roughly rectangular plan organized around a central square courtyard. The building comprises a ground floor, first floor, and attic space, all capped with pitched roofs. The eastern façade is notable for its two circular towers with battered bases, crenellated battlements supported by brick corbels, and vertical loophole openings designed for archery defense.

The western façade displays Renaissance characteristics, constructed of large, roughly cut stone blocks with a central semicircular arch entrance framed by Corinthian columns and an entablature that once bore the alabaster coat of arms of the Rocabertí family. Windows here are rectangular with decorative lintels, and an attic gallery features semicircular arches.

The southern façade contrasts with varied stone cobble masonry, large ground-floor windows, balconies supported by corbels, and a battlement adorned with semicircular arches. The northern side includes three large wings with Gothic coronelle windows and a monumental door opening to the gardens.

The carmelite monastery and church

The adjacent Carmelite monastery retains its Gothic cloister from the late 14th century, extended with galleries in the early 1600s. The church of El Carme features a single nave with side chapels nestled between flying buttresses. Its wooden polychrome ceiling is supported by pointed arches with carved wooden heads representing former monks. The 15th-century Gothic portal depicts the Virgin Mary beneath angels and is crowned by a rose window. The choir floor is decorated with the coat of arms of the Counts of Peralada, and the altar displays Belgian tapestries inspired by Rubens.

Cultural legacy and museums

The castle complex houses the Museu del Castell de Peralada, which includes a historic library with over 80,000 volumes, a glass museum with approximately 2,500 glass artifacts and 1,000 ceramics, and a wine museum showcasing traditional winemaking tools and practices. The castle's wine production, rooted in the monastery's medieval cellars, continues today with the signature Peralada Cava "Gran Claustro," aged in the original vaulted cellars.

Two medieval twin towers now serve as the restaurant del Castell, offering terraces with views of the landscaped park. The castle's extensive parkland, designed by François Duvilliers, enhances the site's aesthetic and recreational appeal, connecting natural beauty with historical architecture.
