Their prestige was significantly enhanced when one of their members ascended to the papal throne as Pope Innocent XI. The Odescalchi family continues to own the castle today, maintaining its historical legacy.

Since 1952, under the stewardship of Livio IV Odescalchi, the castle has been open to the public. It serves not only as a museum but also as a venue for receptions, weddings, and cultural events, blending historical preservation with contemporary use.

Artistic heritage and interior decoration

The brothers Taddeo and Federico Zuccari, prominent late sixteenth-century artists, were commissioned to decorate several rooms, including one that hosted Pope Sixtus IV during his flight from the plague. Their frescoes feature the couple's horoscope and the emblems of the Orsini and Medici families, symbolizing the union of two powerful dynasties.
