The British historian A. Bryer referred to the site by the name "Röşi" or "Rovşe", which is believed to be an old name associated with the port of Of. This suggests the castle's role was closely linked to controlling and monitoring the adjacent harbor and sea traffic.

Architectural features and layout

The surviving remains of Of Castle are modest in scale, indicating it was likely a small fortification rather than a large castle complex. Situated on a rocky headland, the castle's layout probably consisted of a watchtower or keep that provided a vantage point over the sea and surrounding coastline. This would have been complemented by a defensive wall enclosing the tower and protecting the garrison from attacks.
