Well Preserved

Naganeupseong fortress and folk village is a remarkable example of a 14th-century bastioned fortress located in Nagan-myeon, Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, South Korea. It stands as one of the few remaining intact late medieval Korean fortress towns and is designated as Historical Site No. 302. This fortress town combines military architecture with residential and administrative functions, reflecting the strategic and social organization of the Joseon Dynasty.

Historical significance and background

Constructed in the 14th century during the late Goryeo period and extensively used through the Joseon Dynasty, Naganeupseong was designed to serve as the administrative center of the county. The fortress played a crucial role in regional defense against invasions and local uprisings. Its preservation offers valuable insights into the urban planning and military architecture of Korea's late medieval period.

Architectural features and layout

The fortress is characterized by its stone walls reinforced with bastions at strategic points, a distinctive feature that enhanced its defensive capabilities. The walls enclose a compact town area, including residential houses, government offices, military barracks, and storehouses. The fortress walls are approximately 2.7 kilometers in circumference, with several gates controlling access.

Defensive structures

Bastions are protruding structures built along the fortress walls that allowed defenders to cover adjacent walls with crossfire, reducing blind spots. The fortress includes multiple gates, each fortified and equipped with guard posts. The walls are constructed primarily of stone and earth, designed to withstand sieges and artillery attacks common in the late medieval period.

Residential and communal buildings

Within the walls, Naganeupseong preserves a traditional Korean village layout with hanok-style houses, featuring tiled roofs and wooden beams. The village retains its original street plan, narrow alleys, and communal spaces such as wells and marketplaces. Many of the buildings are maintained or restored, offering a living museum experience of Joseon-era daily life.

Educational programs and guided tours are available to provide deeper understanding of the fortress's military and social functions. The village's preservation offers a rare glimpse into Korea's medieval past, making it an important resource for historians and architects alike.

Geographical setting and accessibility

Located in South Jeolla Province, the fortress is situated in a relatively flat area, which made it suitable for both defense and agriculture. The site is accessible by road from Suncheon city, with visitor facilities including parking and information centers.
