Originally constructed in the 9th century during the period of Muslim rule, it underwent major reconstruction in the 15th century, which shaped much of its current form. Though only limited remains survive today, the castle's strategic position atop a hill overlooking the Jalón River valley made it a pivotal military site throughout the Late Medieval period.

According to historian Menéndez Vidal, one of the minstrels who contributed to the Cantar del Mío Cid may have originated from Medinaceli or its vicinity, linking the castle to Spain's rich literary heritage. This connection enhances the castle's historical value beyond its military role.
