Maputo Fortress

The Maputo Fortress, originally known as Fort Nossa Senhora da Conceição, is a prominent historical monument located in the heart of Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique. Situated at Praça 25 de Junho, this fortress stands as a key symbol of the city's colonial past and military architecture. The fortress was constructed during the period when Mozambique was a Portuguese colony, reflecting the strategic importance of the region in maritime defense and colonial administration.

Architectural design and structure

The fortress is designed as a bastioned fortress, a style characterized by angular bastions projecting from the main walls to allow defensive gunfire coverage along the walls and surrounding approaches. It features a square floor plan built primarily of reddish stone masonry, which gives the structure a distinctive appearance. The fortress has a single access gate that opens into a central courtyard, also square in shape. This courtyard serves as the nucleus of the fortress, with various rooms and chambers opening onto it.

The layout reflects practical military architecture of the time, focusing on defense, surveillance, and control. The walls are thick and robust, designed to withstand artillery attacks. The bastions at the corners would have been equipped with cannons to provide overlapping fields of fire, a typical feature of bastioned fortresses built in the early modern period.

Inside the central courtyard stands the equestrian statue of Mouzinho de Albuquerque, a notable Portuguese military figure who played a significant role in the colonial history of Mozambique. Before Mozambique's independence, this statue was prominently displayed in front of the Municipality of Lourenço Marques, the former name of Maputo.

The fortress also serves as the final resting place of Gungunhana, the last emperor of the Gaza Empire, whose remains were transferred here in 1985 from Terceira Island in the Azores. This transfer of remains symbolizes a complex history of colonial conquest, resistance, and post-colonial remembrance.
