The counts of Ortenburg constructed Kamen Castle in the high medieval period during the 12th century. Unlike many contemporaneous noble residences, the Ortenburgs did not inhabit the castle themselves. Instead, it was managed by appointed castellans who oversaw its defensive and administrative functions. In 1418, ownership transferred to the influential counts of Cilli, a powerful noble family in the region. Later, in 1436, the castle passed to the Lamberg family, who played a significant role in its history.

A notable figure associated with Kamen Castle is Gašper Lambergar, a distinguished tournament knight from the Lamberg family. His exploits are celebrated in the Slovene folk poem Pegam and Lambergar, which immortalizes his legendary status. The Lamberg family maintained the castle until the mid-18th century, when they abandoned it in favor of the more comfortable Katzenstein Mansion in Begunje.
