Glehn Park

Glehn Castle, located on the outskirts of Tallinn, Estonia, is a unique example of 19th-century eclectic architecture and artistic vision. Developed by the eccentric landowner and artist Nikolai von Glehn, the castle was completed in 1886 as his personal residence and creative project. Glehn not only designed the building itself but also crafted the interior furnishings and decorative elements, making the castle a rare fusion of architecture and art brut.

Architectural design and artistic features

The castle is notable for its eclectic mix of styles and influences, incorporating elements from Latin, Greek, French, Russian, and German cultural motifs. This half-underground, multi-story building is crowned with a mosaic roof composed of colorful glass panels, showcasing a style reminiscent of Antoni Gaudí. Although it now lies in ruins, the palm house remains a striking example of innovative design and craftsmanship.

Further into the forested area of the park stands a small observatory tower, constructed around 1910. This tower reflects Glehn’s interest in science and exploration, adding a functional yet decorative element to the estate.

The park also features several sculptures created by Glehn, including the imposing Kalevipoeg statue (1908), inspired by the Estonian national epic, and a whimsical Crocodile sculpture (1908). These works contribute to the park’s unique character, blending folklore, nature, and art.

Historical context and restoration

The castle was established on the northern part of the lands belonging to Glehn's family estate, Jälgimäe Manor, as his new residence. After Glehn emigrated to Germany in 1918, the castle was looted and fell into decline. The loss of the original interiors and furnishings marked a significant cultural loss. However, in the 1960s, efforts began to restore the building, recognizing its historical and architectural importance.

The restoration culminated in the reopening of the renovated palace on 24 March 1977. Today, the castle is owned by a local university and serves as a venue for receptions and cultural events, preserving Glehn’s legacy and offering visitors a glimpse into his artistic vision.
