English Tower

The English Tower, locally known as Kulla Inglizit, is a distinctive historical structure located in the city of Shkodër, within the Shkodër region of Albania. Despite its medieval appearance, this tower was constructed in the last quarter of the 19th century as part of a larger complex including an attached mansion. It was commissioned by Lord Alfred Paget, an English nobleman, who established the site as the headquarters for the Protestant Missionaries in Albania. The tower originally functioned as a clock tower, serving both practical and symbolic roles in the community.

Architectural features and design

The English Tower presents an intriguing blend of stylistic elements that evoke a medieval fortress, though its construction is firmly rooted in the Modern period. Changes during the 20th century

Following the upheavals of World War II and the establishment of a communist regime in Albania, the entire complex was nationalized. The mansion was repurposed as an ethnographic museum, showcasing local culture and history, while the tower was assigned to a fire protection agency. During this period, the tower's clocks were removed on the orders of Enver Hoxha, the communist leader who ruled Albania from 1941 to 1985, reflecting the regime's policy of suppressing foreign influences and symbols.

After the museum relocated in 1990, the complex experienced neglect and deterioration, with the tower becoming inaccessible to the public. Meanwhile, the mansion and its surrounding garden have been adapted for use as a restaurant, preserving some of the site's cultural value and public engagement.

Today, the English Tower stands as a well-preserved monument of 19th-century architecture and missionary history in Shkodër. Although visitors cannot enter the tower itself, the adjacent mansion and garden provide a glimpse into the past and serve as a social and cultural venue.
