Château des Rohan

Château des Rohan, also known as Rohan Castle or Rohan-Schloss, stands as a prominent example of 18th-century neoclassical architecture in the city of Saverne, located in the historic region of Alsace, France. This grand palace was constructed between 1780 and 1790 under the direction of the architect Nicolas Salins de Montfort. It was commissioned by Louis René Édouard de Rohan-Guéméné, the Prince-Bishop of Strasbourg during the late 18th century, who was a member of the influential House of Rohan. The castle served as one of the residences for the prince-bishops, who ruled the Prince-Bishopric of Strasbourg, an ecclesiastical principality within the Holy Roman Empire from the 13th century until its secularization in 1803.

The castle's façade is a defining feature, stretching approximately 140 metres wide and constructed from distinctive red Vosges sandstone. This impressive frontage is regarded as one of the finest examples of neoclassical design in the region. The current building was erected on the site of an earlier structure built in 1670, which was destroyed by fire in 1779. That predecessor itself had replaced the Château Vieux (Old Castle) dating back to 1417, which remarkably still survives today. The Château Vieux holds historical significance, having been the venue for two of the three marriages of Charles, Prince de Soubise, in the mid-18th century.

Architectural design and construction

The design of Château des Rohan reflects the neoclassical style that was prevalent in the late 18th century. Architect Nicolas Salins de Montfort crafted a palace that emphasized symmetry, classical proportions, and restrained decorative elements characteristic of the period. The use of red Vosges sandstone not only provided a striking visual impact but also connected the building materially to the local geology and architectural traditions of Alsace.

The castle's layout features a monumental façade with a series of evenly spaced windows and pilasters, creating a rhythm that enhances the building's grandeur. The structure was originally intended to be lavishly furnished, as evidenced by the extensive collection of Qing porcelain and lacquerware assembled by Louis René Édouard de Rohan-Guéméné, which was displayed in his other residence, the Rohan Palace in Strasbourg.

Historical context and significance

The Prince-Bishopric of Strasbourg was a unique political entity within the Holy Roman Empire, combining both secular and ecclesiastical authority. The House of Rohan, a noble family of Breton origin, held the bishopric in the 18th century and commissioned several grand residences, including the Château des Rohan in Saverne, the Rohan Palace in Strasbourg, and Rohan Castle in Mutzig.

The construction of the current Château des Rohan coincided with the final decades of clerical rule before the upheavals of the French Revolution. At the outbreak of the revolution, only the exterior of the castle was completed. The abolition of clerical rule led to the loss of the castle's original function and ownership, marking a significant turning point in its history.

Later uses and transformations

Following the revolution, the castle experienced a period of decline. However, under Napoleon III in the mid-19th century, the building was renovated and extended towards the city. The original park surrounding the castle was irrevocably altered in 1853 due to the construction of the Marne-Rhine Canal.

Since 1858, Château des Rohan has housed a city museum featuring collections of history, decorative arts, and archaeology. The museum's holdings were enriched in the 20th century by the addition of the art and ethnographic collection of the politician Louise Weiss. The castle has also served various functions, including accommodation for officers' widows and military barracks following the Franco-Prussian War.

Current use and cultural role

Today, Château des Rohan remains a vital cultural landmark in Saverne. One wing of the castle operates as a youth hostel, providing accommodation for visitors. Another wing houses the Espace Rohan, a modern theatre and concert hall with a seating capacity of 500, contributing to the city's vibrant cultural scene.

The castle's museum continues to attract visitors interested in the rich history of the region, the architectural heritage of the House of Rohan, and the extensive collections of art and archaeology. Its preservation as a well-preserved example of post-Renaissance neoclassical architecture ensures its continued importance as both a historical monument and a living cultural center.
