Boppard Roman Fort

Boppard Roman Fort, also known historically as the castrum of Bodobrica, is a significant late Roman military fortification located in Boppard, Germany. Established around 360 AD during the Late Roman Empire, this fort represents one of the best-preserved examples of Roman military architecture north of the Alps. Its strategic position on the banks of the Rhine River made it a crucial defensive and commercial site in Roman Germania.

Architectural design and fortifications

The fort was built as a large rectangular enclosure measuring approximately 308 by 154 metres, covering an area of about 4.7 hectares. Its walls were constructed with remarkable engineering precision, featuring thicknesses of 3 metres on the land side and slightly thinner walls of 2.5 metres on the Rhine side. The walls stood at an imposing height of 9 metres, designed to withstand assaults and provide a vantage point for defenders.

One of the fort's most distinctive features was its array of 28 towers, including 20 horse-shoe shaped towers positioned on the landward side, spaced approximately 27 metres apart. These towers enhanced the fort's defensive capabilities by allowing enfilading fire along the walls and serving as lookout posts. The fort's layout reflects typical Roman castrum design principles, emphasizing strong fortifications combined with practical internal spaces.
