Ardtully House

Ardtully House is a striking ruin located west of the village of Kilgarvan in County Kerry, Ireland. This site has a layered history that begins in the 13th century with a monastery, which according to tradition, was the original structure here. The stones of this monastery were later repurposed to build a castle for the McFineen McCarthy family, a notable Gaelic Irish clan. This castle stood until the mid-17th century when it was destroyed during the turbulent period of Cromwell's conquest of Ireland.

Following the destruction of the McCarthy castle, the Orpen family established a mansion on the same site, utilizing the remains of the old castle. This mansion represented a transition from medieval fortifications to a more residential style of architecture, reflecting the shifting social and political landscape of Ireland during the early modern period.

17th-century origins and architectural evolution

The mansion was a five-bay, two-storey building with a total of 27 rooms. Notable features included a circular three-storey battlemented corner tower on the southeast corner and a three-storey corbelled circular turret on the east corner. These elements gave the house a fortified appearance, blending romantic historicism with the comforts of a Victorian-era residence.

Destruction and current state

During the Irish War of Independence in 1921, Ardtully House was deliberately burned down by the Irish Republican Army (IRA). This act was part of a wider campaign against symbols of British rule and landed gentry in Ireland. The house was never rebuilt, and since then it has remained a ruin.

Today, visitors can freely access the grounds of Ardtully House. However, the ruin itself is unsafe to enter due to the risk of falling stones. Adjacent to the house ruins are the remains of a walled garden, which adds to the historical atmosphere of the site.
