Killaha Castle

Killaha Castle, also known as Killagha Castle, is a historic 16th-century Renaissance tower house located in County Kerry, Ireland. Situated in a field north of the townland of Upper Killaha, it served as the seat of the prominent O'Donoghue of the Glens family. The castle's strategic position overlooking the Glen of the Flesk River provided both defense and a commanding view of the surrounding landscape.

Historical background and significance

The castle was constructed in the 16th century during the Renaissance period, a time when tower houses were common among Irish noble families. Killaha Castle was the ancestral home of the O'Donoghues, a Gaelic Irish clan with significant influence in the region. In 1643, Geoffrey the Poet became the chief of the O'Donoghues and was well known for hosting lavish banquets atop the castle's tower, reflecting both the clan's wealth and cultural prominence.

These grand celebrations came to an abrupt end in 1652 during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland. The castle was attacked by General Ludlow's forces, who employed newly introduced cannon artillery to breach its defenses. This assault resulted in the partial destruction of the castle, marking the beginning of its decline and eventual ruin.

Architectural features and layout

The most prominent feature of Killaha Castle is its 18-meter-high tower, which remains partially standing today. This tower is believed to have been attached to a corner of a rectangular bawn, a fortified enclosure typical of Irish tower houses of the period.
