The earliest records of a residence on the site date back to the early 15th century. It was originally owned by Jan Sloeven and Kateline Sersander, a couple from prominent families in Ghent. The first documented reference to a castle at this location appears in 1511, when ownership was held by Roeland Soete. Roeland had inherited the property in 1490 from his father, Jan Zoete van Lake, who bore the title of lord of Ter Leyen. It is believed that Roeland Soete was responsible for transforming the inherited manor into a fortified structure, effectively castellating the mansion to enhance its defensive capabilities.
