Sturehof Castle

Sturehof Castle, located in Salem, Sweden, is a manor with origins dating back to the Middle Ages. The estate's history is closely tied to the influential Sture family, notably count and statesman Svante Sture, who owned the village and was tragically murdered by King Erik XIV. His son, Mauritz Sture, named the manor "Sturehof," marking the beginning of its noble heritage. Over the following centuries, the manor passed through the hands of several prominent noble families, including the Oxenstiernas and the Wrangels, each contributing to its legacy.

Reconstruction and architectural transformation in the 18th century

The current form of Sturehof Castle largely dates from the 1770s, when Johan Liljencrantz, the finance minister to King Gustav III, acquired the property in 1778 as a summer residence. At that time, the original farmhouse had been destroyed by fire, leaving only two wings from the 1600s intact. Liljencrantz commissioned the renowned architect Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz to design a new main building. Adelcrantz was a prominent figure in Swedish architecture, also known for designing the Gustav III's opera house in Stockholm. His work at Sturehof introduced a refined architectural style that harmonized with the existing wings.

Architectural style and features

The manor embodies the 18th-century Swedish neoclassical style, characterized by balanced proportions and elegant decorative elements. The new main building was furnished and decorated by skilled craftsmen and decorative painters of the era, including Louis Masreliez, who contributed to the interior's artistic richness. The manor also features a significant collection of Marieberg stoves, thanks to Liljencrantz's co-ownership of the Marie porcelain factory. Sturehof today holds the largest collection of these stoves in Sweden, totaling 17 pieces. Among them, the "Liljencrantz fireplace" stands out as the most magnificent and was even depicted on a Swedish postage stamp.

Gardens and landscape

To the north of the manor, an English garden was established in the 18th century, reflecting the period's landscape design trends. This garden complements the manor's architectural elegance, offering a carefully planned natural setting that enhances the estate's overall aesthetic and historical atmosphere.

Later history and current status

Johan Liljencrantz's residence at Sturehof was relatively brief. After the death of his first wife in 1788, he moved to the newly built Norsborg mansion with his second wife, Eleonora. Since then, Sturehof has changed hands and functions over the years. Today, the manor is managed by the Real Estate Department of the Salem municipality. The south wing of the manor houses a café, making it accessible to visitors who wish to explore its historical ambiance and architectural beauty.
