Ramsberg Castle

Ramsberg Castle is a notable high medieval hill castle located in Donzdorf, Germany, with origins dating back to around 1200-1225. It was likely constructed by the knight Ulrich von Plochingen and Konrad, the monk from Rechenberg. Positioned strategically on a ridge within the Rehgebirge range, the castle exemplifies the typical spur castle layout where natural terrain enhances defensive capabilities.

Early history and ownership

The earliest documented reference to Ramsberg Castle appears in a deed dated September 22, 1270, which records a donation by Konrad, son of Ulrich von Plochingen, to the monastery of St. Blasien. This highlights the castle's role not only as a military stronghold but also as a center of feudal and ecclesiastical influence in the region. The castle was originally under the control of the Plochingen family, with Ulrich von Plochingen noted as the first known occupant around 1225.

From 1327 to 1529, ownership passed to the Lords of Rechenberg, a noble family who maintained the castle for over two centuries. This period likely saw the castle's role evolve amid the political and social changes of late medieval Germany. After 1529, Ramsberg Castle experienced frequent changes in ownership, passing through seven different holders until the late 20th century.

Architectural features and renovations

The great hall (dürnitz)

One of the castle's most remarkable architectural elements is the great hall, known as the Dürnitz, dating from the 13th century. This expansive interior space is supported by a ribbed vault ceiling and divided into three longitudinal naves by four octagonal pillars, creating nine bays. This architectural design is exceptionally rare north of the Alps, with a close parallel only found in a Crusader castle in Acre, underscoring the high level of craftsmanship and structural sophistication present at Ramsberg.

The chapel

The castle chapel, built around 1560, reflects the late Gothic architectural style prevalent during the Renaissance period's early phase. Initially dedicated to Saint Margaret, it was later rededicated to Saint Martin. The chapel suffered fire damage in the 20th century but was carefully restored in the 1960s, preserving its religious and historical significance within the castle complex.

Stone house and other structures

Between 1560 and 1580, Ramsberg Castle underwent a significant rebuilding phase that included the construction of the stone house, which now forms much of the castle's current appearance. This building exemplifies the architectural transition from medieval fortification to Renaissance residential style, marking a shift in the castle's function and status.

The castle originally featured a prominent bergfried (main defensive tower), which was dismantled in 1830 due to structural instability. This removal significantly altered the castle's silhouette and diminished its defensive capabilities.

Later history and preservation

After falling into municipal ownership in 1809, Ramsberg Castle's condition declined, culminating in the dismantling of the bergfried. In 1977, it gained recognition as a cultural landmark along the Staufer Road, emphasizing its historical importance in the region.

In 2000, the castle was acquired by Dieter Wißmach, a textile entrepreneur from nearby Göppingen, who established a stud farm on the grounds. This modern adaptation links the castle's historic fabric with contemporary agricultural and equestrian activities.

Castle layout and surviving elements

The castle is arranged on a ridge, utilizing the natural topography for defense, characteristic of hill castles. The surviving structures include the great hall with its rare rib-vaulted ceiling, the late Gothic chapel, and the stone house from the Renaissance rebuilding. The absence of the bergfried marks a significant change in the castle's defensive architecture.

The castle grounds encompass a courtyard and the modern stud farm, which contribute to the site's ongoing functional and cultural relevance.
