Radoszyce

Radoszyce Castle stands as a notable example of a 14th-century Gothic hill castle located in Radoszyce, Poland. This castle's origins are closely linked to the royal history of Poland, with the earliest mention dating back to 1369, referencing a royal manor that likely consisted of a wooden structure near the future town market. By the end of the 14th century, this wooden manor was abandoned and dismantled to make way for a new, more durable stone and brick castle commissioned by King Władysław Jagiełło.

Location and strategic setting

The castle was strategically built on a small sandy elevation known as the "town island," situated north of the settlement amidst surrounding wetlands. This location provided natural defensive advantages, as the wetlands and the artificial moat enhanced the castle's protection. The moat, shaped like a crescent, was approximately 40 meters long, 9 meters wide, and 1.5 meters deep, and was kept filled with water to serve as a formidable barrier against invaders.

Architectural features and layout

The main building of Radoszyce Castle was a Gothic brick house constructed on a stone foundation. It featured a rectangular plan measuring approximately 10.85 by 32.52 meters. This two-story structure was partially underground with a basement and contained six chambers along with two large halls, each measuring about 8.5 by 10.5 meters. Historical inventories mention a chapel located on the upper floor, as well as a small tower-like room above it, possibly indicating the presence of a corner turret on the southwest side.

Besides the main brick building, other ancillary structures were primarily wooden and served agricultural or service functions. The entire complex was enclosed by a wooden palisade, adding to its defensive capabilities.

Historical significance and royal connections

Radoszyce Castle frequently hosted King Władysław Jagiełło during his travels across the kingdom, underscoring its importance as a royal residence. However, subsequent monarchs visited less frequently, with King Sigismund Augustus being the last known royal visitor. Over time, the castle transitioned from a royal residence to the seat of the local starostwo (administrative district), reflecting changes in its political and administrative role.

Due to its status as royal property, the castle was often pledged or mortgaged, which contributed to its gradual decline. Between 1768 and 1789, the main castle house suffered significant damage and was partially dismantled.

Present condition and archaeological remains

Today, the only surviving part of Radoszyce Castle is the so-called "Winiarnia" (Wine Cellar), which archaeological research has identified as the extreme western section of the original Gothic house. The current length of this building corresponds to the width of the original gable wall, providing valuable insight into the castle's original footprint and construction techniques.

Despite the partial loss of the main structures, the site remains a valuable cultural and historical landmark, illustrating the architectural style and defensive strategies of late medieval Polish castles.
