Shortly after the tower’s construction, the wooden defensive walls were replaced with more durable stone walls, and a half-round tower was added to strengthen the fortifications. These additions reflect the evolving military architecture of the High Medieval period, emphasizing improved defense mechanisms against siege warfare.

Transition to Bernese noble ownership

In the late 13th century, the political landscape shifted as Bernese influence expanded, gradually pushing Savoyard power out of Bümpliz. By this time, local Bernese nobles began to adopt the name of the estate, indicating their control and the castle’s integration into Bernese noble society. Under their stewardship, the castle’s structure remained largely unchanged for nearly two centuries, preserving its medieval character.

The Erlach family and architectural transformation

The year 1470 marked a significant turning point when the powerful Bernese patrician Erlach family acquired the castle and the surrounding village. The Erlachs transformed the castle from a purely military fortress into a more comfortable and prestigious administrative and residential estate. A new gatehouse tower was constructed during this period, which remarkably remains almost intact today. The castle’s defensive features were enhanced with a moat and a drawbridge, the remains of which are still visible, showcasing the blend of security and status symbol the castle represented.

Decline and the rise of Neues Schloss Bümpliz

By the 17th century, Old Bümpliz Castle had become outdated and less suited for modern residential needs. In 1742, Daniel Tschiffely commissioned architect Albrecht Stürler to build the Neues Schloss Bümpliz (New Bümpliz Castle) southwest of the old site. This new construction reflected contemporary tastes and architectural styles, leading to partial demolition and rebuilding of the old castle during its construction.

19th-century adaptation and modern restoration

In 1839, Johann Friedrich Albrecht Tribolet purchased both the old and new castles. He repurposed them into a private sanatorium for mental health patients, an early example of adaptive reuse of historic buildings. This function continued until the late 20th century.

The castle underwent significant restoration in 1979-1980. The gatehouse was reopened, a section of the moat was excavated, and a drawbridge was reinstated to echo its medieval past. The windows were restored in the Baroque style, and the roof, damaged by fire, was reconstructed to closely match its historical appearance. The north-west wing was rebuilt, while the north-east wing was recreated using modern materials like concrete and glass. This wing now houses a restaurant, while the gatehouse and courtyard serve as public spaces. The remainder of the castle is used for the Bümpliz village archives and various offices, blending heritage preservation with contemporary utility.
