Loenersloot Castle is a historic fortress located on the left bank of the river Angstel in the village of Loenersloot, Netherlands. This castle is accessible via a wooden lifting bridge, a feature typical of water castles designed to control access and enhance defense. The castle’s origins trace back to the high medieval period, with the earliest documented mention dating from 1258. While the Van Loenersloot family is recorded as early as 1156, the castle itself was established later, with the oldest surviving parts built by this influential family during the 13th century.

The medieval origins and architectural features

The castle’s round defense towers are the oldest surviving elements, dating from the 13th century. These towers exemplify typical medieval military architecture, designed for surveillance and protection. The castle’s position by the river was strategic, providing a natural moat and enhancing its defensive capabilities. The Van Loenersloot family and early history

The Van Loenersloot family played a significant role in the local history of the village from the 12th century onward. They were the original builders and owners of the castle, establishing it as a seat of power and local governance. The castle was a symbol of their status and influence in the region. The family’s prominence is reflected in the castle’s early fortifications and its strategic location along the Angstel river.

Ownership changes and later history

In 1516, Amelis van Amstel van Mijnden acquired Loenersloot Castle. He was already the owner of other notable castles, including Mijnden Castle and Kronenburg Castle. After his death, the castle passed to his second son, also named Amelis, and remained in the family until the 17th century. The last male descendant died without direct heirs, leading to the inheritance being divided among three heiresses. Only one of these heiresses, Maria Johanna van Amstel van Mijnded, married Pieter Reinier, baron of Stepraedt. Their son, Diederik Johan, inherited Loenersloot along with other estates such as Doddeldael and Ewijk.

Due to the number of properties owned by the family, they did not reside permanently at Loenersloot but rented it out to various tenants. This marked a period of less direct familial involvement with the castle, which may have contributed to its gradual decline.

Decline and restoration efforts

In 1766, the castle was purchased by Hendrik Willem van Hoorn. Unfortunately, this period was detrimental to the castle’s preservation, as Van Hoorn began dismantling parts of the structure. His financial difficulties culminated in bankruptcy four years later, leading to the sale of the castle to Andries Jan Strick van Lindschoten in 1770. Strick van Lindschoten undertook efforts to conserve the castle’s medieval character, halting further destruction and preserving key architectural features.

In the 20th century, the castle came under the ownership of M.F.M. baroness van Nagell, who established a foundation dedicated to the castle’s upkeep and preservation. This foundation has played a crucial role in maintaining the castle’s historical integrity and ensuring its survival into the modern era.

Architectural evolution and current status

Loenersloot Castle’s architecture is a composite of various periods, with the medieval round towers standing alongside later additions from the 17th and 18th centuries. The castle’s layout includes defensive walls, a courtyard, and residential buildings that reflect the transition from a purely military fortress to a noble residence.
