Liebau Castle, located in the municipality of Pöhl, Germany, is a significant late medieval spur castle ruin perched on a flat rock spur overlooking the right bank of the Elster valley. First documented in 1327 as "castrum lubawe," the castle represents a typical example of medieval fortifications that evolved over centuries from a purely defensive stronghold to a Renaissance-style residence. By 1441, ownership had passed to the Doelau family. Between 1500 and 1550, the castle underwent significant transformation reflecting the broader Renaissance architectural trends sweeping Europe. The Doelau family rebuilt the castle, adapting its medieval military features into a more comfortable and representative Renaissance manor house. This period saw the introduction of refined living quarters, larger windows, and stylistic elements that emphasized aesthetics alongside defense.

The castle's military significance was underscored during the Thirty Years’ War when, in 1640, it was sacked by Swedish mercenaries. The assault caused considerable damage, particularly to the stair tower, which was set on fire. Despite such destruction, the Doelau family retained ownership until 1725. Subsequently, the castle passed to Johanna Charlotte von Beust until 1742, after which it was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin.

In the late 20th century, specifically between 1995 and 1997, the site underwent preservation and archaeological efforts in collaboration with the Saxon State Office for Archaeology. These measures aimed to stabilize the ruins and protect the castle as a valuable cultural monument, recognizing its historical and architectural significance.

Architectural features and defensive structures

Liebau Castle was constructed primarily from local stone, allowing it to integrate seamlessly with the rocky spur on which it stands. The castle complex occupies an approximately triangular plateau measuring about 50 by 30 meters. At its core lies the main castle ruin, extending roughly 20 to 25 meters, which included a combined defensive and residential tower, a gate tower, and a surrounding curtain wall equipped with battlements.

The design reflects typical medieval military architecture, with an emphasis on layered defense. The curtain wall provided a protected walkway for defenders, while the gate tower controlled access to the interior. The castle was further fortified by two deep section trenches cut into the rock, each approximately five meters wide and two meters deep, which guarded the more vulnerable approaches.

To the east, the castle was protected by a substantial neck ditch—a defensive trench about 20 to 25 meters wide and 5 to 6 meters deep. This ditch was crossed by a drawbridge, a common medieval defensive feature that allowed the castle to be isolated from attackers. The combination of natural topography and man-made defenses made Liebau Castle a formidable stronghold in its time.

The castle’s location is part of a wider network of fortifications in the Elster valley region. It lies approximately two kilometers north of the Pöhl reservoir and about four to five kilometers north of the Elsterberg castle ruins on the opposite bank of the Elster River. The castle’s evolution from a medieval fortress to a Renaissance manor reflects broader socio-political changes in the region, where military architecture gradually gave way to residential comfort and status display.
