Gvozdansko Castle

Gvozdansko Castle is a notable late medieval fortress located in the village of Gvozdansko, nestled between the towns of Dvor and Glina in Sisak-Moslavina County, central Croatia. Constructed in the 15th century, this castle was primarily built due to the mining interests of the influential Croatian noble family Zrinski. However, the most significant and final siege took place from 3 October 1577 to 13 January 1578, led by Ferhat-paša Sokolović with an Ottoman force of approximately 10,000 soldiers.

This siege was marked by extreme hardship for the defenders, who faced harsh winter conditions, lack of firewood, and dwindling supplies. Despite these challenges, the Croatian defenders held their positions with remarkable resilience. The castle ultimately fell when the last defenders succumbed to freezing temperatures, unable to light fires for warmth. The Ottoman forces only entered the fortress after the defenders had perished, finding their bodies frozen in combat positions, still clutching their muskets.

The legacy of the defenders

The bravery and endurance of the defenders became legendary. The Ottoman commander was reportedly stunned by the sight of the frozen soldiers, a testament to their determination and sacrifice. This event has been remembered as a symbol of Croatian resistance during the Ottoman wars in Europe.
