Although today only a solitary tower remains, this castle holds significant historical importance as a late medieval stronghold with roots tracing back to the early 14th century.

The exact origins of Goudenstein Castle remain shrouded in mystery. Historical records mention a Rudolf van Haeften in 1281, who served as the keeper for the Count of Guelders. Whether Rudolf was the original owner of the domain of Haaften or the founder of the castle is unknown. At its zenith, Goudenstein Castle was a formidable fortress.
