The original fortress, often referred to as the Ancien Château Comtal de Dalhem or Old Castle of the Counts of Dalhem, was constructed between 1076 and 1080 by Palatine Count Hermann II. This medieval castle was strategically positioned on a rocky outcrop between the valleys of the Berwinne and Bolland rivers, overseeing key routes along the right bank of the Meuse River leading to important cities such as Maastricht, Tongres, Liège, Huy, and Aachen.
