Costaérès Castle

Costaérès Castle is a striking example of a neo-medieval style mansion located on a small islet off the coast of Brittany, France. Despite often being referred to as a château, it is in fact a large holiday home characteristic of the late 19th century, embodying the architectural tastes and leisure culture of that era along the famous pink granite coast.

Architectural design and materials

The building's complex massing results from several extensions made over time, giving it an irregular yet harmonious silhouette. It is constructed primarily from pink granite quarried locally at La Clarté in the Perros-Guirec district. This distinctive granite lends the mansion its unique coloration and ties it visually to the surrounding coastal landscape. The roof is covered in slate, a traditional material that complements the robust stone walls.

One of the mansion's most remarkable interior features is its use of reclaimed wood from the wreck of the three-masted ship Mauritius, which was beached nearby in the winter of 1896. This wood was carefully incorporated into the interior design, reflecting a creative reuse of maritime materials and adding historical depth to the residence.

Historical context and ownership

The mansion was originally built on an islet purchased in the late summer of 1892 by Bruno Abakanowicz (also known as Bruno Abdank), a Polish engineer and mathematician. Abakanowicz was a notable figure who also constructed the Bellevue hotel in Ploumanac'h around 1896. The islet was acquired from René Le Brozec, a local customs officer and farmer who had used the land for potato cultivation and drying lichen and fish. The transaction price was modest, at 0.25 francs per square meter.

Construction was completed around 1896 with the involvement of engineer Lanmoniez and entrepreneur Pierre Le Tensorer from Lannion. After Abakanowicz's death in 1900, his daughter Sofia Abakanowicz, who became Madame Poray, extended the villa by adding a wing to the west side, enhancing the rear facade and increasing the living space.

20th century events and preservation

During World War II, the villa was requisitioned by the German army, which led to some interior damage. This period marked a challenging time for the building, reflecting the broader impacts of the war on private properties in occupied France.

Later, on September 6, 1990, a fire broke out following roofing work, partially destroying the interior of the mansion. Despite this setback, the castle remains an iconic landmark on the pink granite coast.

Costaérès Castle is frequently featured on postcards and in tourist guides representing the Côte de Granit Rose, Côtes-d'Armor, and Brittany as a whole.
