Chorrera Tower

Chorrera Tower, locally known as Torreón de la Chorrera, is a significant 17th-century coastal fortress located in Havana, Cuba. Positioned strategically at the mouth of the Almendares river—formerly known as the La Chorrera river—this fortress was constructed to defend the western approaches to the old town of Havana from naval attacks, particularly during the era of intense colonial rivalry in the Caribbean.

The full name of the tower is Torreón de Santa Dorotea de Luna de la Chorrera. Its history is intertwined with that of the nearby Cojímar Tower, which guarded the eastern river mouth. Both towers were part of a defensive strategy to protect Havana from enemy landings at vulnerable river mouths that were beyond the coverage of the city's main fortresses: La Fuerza, La Punta, and El Morro.

Historical background and strategic importance

The idea to fortify the mouths of the La Chorrera and Cojímar rivers dates back to the early 17th century. The Spanish colonial governor at the time, Don Pedro Valdés, proposed to the Spanish Crown the construction of defensive towers to prevent enemy incursions, especially from the English. However, the project was initially shelved after the end of hostilities with England.

In 1633, a renewed assessment was conducted by Captain-general Marquess de Cadereyta and Admiral Carlos de Ibarra. Their inspection of Havana's fortifications led to the recommendation to build the Chorrera and Cojímar towers. These sites were identified as critical points that could be exploited by the Dutch or other naval powers to land troops and launch surprise attacks on Havana.

Following a royal decree in 1635, Governor Francisco Riaño Gamboa was ordered to commence construction. However, actual building work did not begin until 1646 under the direction of his successor, Don Álvaro de Luna y Sarmiento. The urgency of construction was driven by the growing threat of Dutch naval power in the Caribbean seas.

Architectural features and military function

Originally, the Chorrera Tower was designed as a rectangular casemated battery with two floors, a common feature in coastal fortifications of the period. The casemates provided protected gun emplacements allowing defenders to fire upon enemy ships while being shielded from return fire.

The tower was armed with a total of six cannons—four heavy artillery pieces and two lighter guns—positioned to cover the river mouth and adjacent coastline. Its garrison consisted of approximately 28 soldiers responsible for manning the artillery and maintaining vigilance against enemy approaches.

The tower's location at the river mouth was crucial for controlling access to Havana via the Almendares river. It served as an early warning post and deterrent against enemy ships attempting to land troops or supplies. The fortification's design allowed for overlapping fields of fire with other nearby defenses, creating a network of protection around the city.

In 1762, during the British siege of Havana, several English ships anchored at the mouth of the La Chorrera river to replenish their water supplies. From this position, they launched a cannonade against the Chorrera Tower, which resulted in severe damage and left the structure almost completely destroyed.

Following this attack, the tower was rebuilt maintaining its rectangular shape and casemated design. The reconstruction reinforced its defensive capabilities, preserving its role as a coastal battery. Despite the damage sustained, the tower remained a vital component of Havana's maritime defenses.

In modern times, the tower has been repurposed and is known to house a restaurant, although access may vary. Its preservation as a historic structure contributes to Havana's rich cultural heritage and offers insight into the military architecture of the colonial period.
