Veltwijck Castle, also known locally as Waterkasteel Hof van Veltwijck, is a notable Renaissance-era water castle located in the village of Ekeren, within the province of Antwerp in the Flemish region of Belgium. Its origins date back to the 16th century, with the first documented mention in 1565. The castle was constructed shortly before this date by Aert van Veltwijck, a prosperous cloth merchant from Bergen op Zoom, reflecting the wealth and social status of its owner rather than serving as a military fortress.

Architectural design and layout

The original design of veltwijck castle featured a square complex with four slender corner towers, each rising elegantly and emphasizing the Renaissance aesthetic rather than defensive functionality. This alteration transformed the castle's footprint from a square to a distinctive U-shaped layout. In 1905, further modifications were made when a second floor was added to the main south wing by the then owner, Baroness de Borrekens. These changes reflect the castle's adaptation to residential needs and aesthetic preferences across centuries.

Historical context and significance

During the Siege of Antwerp (1584-1585), a pivotal event in the Eighty Years' War, veltwijck castle was notably uninhabited. This period of conflict led to the castle's decline, as it was not maintained or defended.
