Val Castle

Val Castle, locally known as Château de Val, is a remarkable hill castle located near the village of Lanobre in the Cantal department of France. This historic fortress stands on a small peninsula surrounded by the waters of the Bort-les-Orgues Reservoir, a man-made lake created in the mid-20th century. Originally constructed in the 13th century, the castle’s origins trace back to an earlier fortified site, incorporating remains of a 10th-century keep that had been in the possession of the local noble family since the mid-12th century.

The castle’s foundation was laid by a young member of the Thynière family, who moved from the ancestral Thynières Castle situated on a hill opposite to Val Castle’s location. Initially known as Enval, the castle was built upon earlier medieval fortifications and evolved significantly over the centuries, reflecting the changing needs and tastes of its successive owners.

Historical development and ownership

During the early 13th century, the castle served as a fortified residence and administrative center for the Thynière family. By the first half of the 15th century, ownership passed to Guillaume IV d'Estaing, also known as Guillot, who was chamberlain to Charles VII of France. Around 1450, Guillaume IV undertook a major rebuilding project that gave the castle much of its present-day form, characterized by robust defensive features and elegant residential quarters. The d’Estaing family retained possession of the castle for more than two centuries, until 1660, when a descendant sold it due to financial pressures linked to life at the court in Versailles.

Following the sale, the castle fell into varying states of repair and neglect. Several owners between 1660 and 1685 attempted restorations, but by the early 18th century, the castle had become uninhabitable and was abandoned. In 1779, Ignace Dubois de Saint-Etienne, a wealthy merchant, purchased the dilapidated fortress and carried out a comprehensive restoration, making it his family home. However, during the upheavals of the French Revolution in 1793, the castle was confiscated and looted, only to be reacquired by Ignace’s son, Gaspard, in 1805.

In 1814, the castle changed hands again, bought by merchant André Longueville, who intended to profit from its materials by cutting down the surrounding park and selling stones from the structure. His plans to demolish the castle were halted by a court order in 1837, preserving the historic edifice from destruction.

The mid-19th century saw renewed interest in the castle’s restoration, culminating in its purchase by Jules Souchard, the French consul in Boston, in 1865. Souchard completed extensive restoration works, reviving the castle’s grandeur. The property was inherited by the d’Arcy family in 1896, who maintained it until the mid-20th century.

The impact of the bort-les-orgues dam and reservoir

Between 1942 and 1952, the construction of the Bort-les-Orgues Dam on the Dordogne River dramatically altered the castle’s environment. The creation of the reservoir flooded the valley below, submerging the castle’s original parkland and transforming Val Castle into an island fortress. Initial plans anticipated that the castle itself would be submerged, leading to the expropriation and evacuation of the d’Arcy family in 1946. However, subsequent adjustments to the reservoir’s water levels spared the castle from complete inundation.

Despite this reprieve, the castle was left empty and vulnerable, suffering looting in 1949. A guard was appointed in 1951 to protect the site. In 1953, the castle was symbolically sold to the municipality of Bort-les-Orgues for one franc, although the castle technically remains within the commune of Lanobre. Since then, local authorities have undertaken extensive restoration and preservation efforts, transforming Val Castle into a popular tourist attraction.

Architectural features and layout

Val Castle is notable for its irregular rectangular plan constructed primarily of stone. The castle’s foundations date back to the 13th century, incorporating masonry from the earlier 11th-century donjon. The main building is a tall rectangular block, flanked by six distinctive towers, each crowned with machicolations—defensive openings in the battlements used to repel attackers. These towers are topped with conical roofs, often described as "pepperpot" roofs due to their shape, giving the castle a fairy-tale appearance.

The western side of the castle features the original gatehouse, which has been preserved through centuries. Adjacent to the main structure lie outbuildings and a stone fountain, adding to the castle’s historic ambiance.

The chapel of saint-blaise

Northeast of the main castle stands the Saint-Blaise chapel, constructed toward the end of the 15th century. This religious edifice is an integral part of the castle complex and was officially recognized as a historic monument in 1961. The chapel adds cultural and architectural value to the site, reflecting the spiritual life of the castle’s medieval inhabitants.

Interior and current use

The castle’s interior showcases a blend of medieval architecture and 19th-century decorative styles. The lower floor contains large rooms richly decorated in the style of the 1800s, reflecting the tastes of the restoration period. The upper floor is dedicated to contemporary art exhibitions, held annually during the summer months, making the castle a vibrant cultural venue.

Visitors can also climb to the roof, which offers stunning panoramic views over the lake and surrounding valley, providing a unique perspective on the castle’s strategic location and natural beauty.

Today, Val Castle is a well-preserved and restored heritage site open to the public for a fee. It is accessible via a footbridge connecting the island to the mainland, allowing visitors to explore its historic halls, towers, and chapel. The castle’s picturesque setting on the water and its rich history make it a highly recommended destination, although it can become crowded during peak summer months.

The castle’s transformation from a medieval fortress to a cultural landmark demonstrates the resilience and enduring appeal of historic architecture in the face of environmental and social changes.
