Sundrum Castle is a historic fortress located approximately 1.5 kilometres north of Coylton in Ayrshire, Scotland. Originally constructed in the 14th century for Sir Duncan Wallace, Sheriff of Ayr, it stands as one of the oldest inhabited castles in Scotland. The castle's initial form was a fortified tower keep, typical of late medieval Scottish defensive architecture, built to provide protection and assert feudal authority.

Medieval origins and architectural features

The castle's original late medieval structure was a rectangular tower keep, featuring thick stone walls designed to withstand sieges and attacks. Extensive renovations carried out in the 1990s restored the castle's structural integrity and historical features. The property was then subdivided into three separate private residences: the original tower keep, a Georgian wing, and a Victorian wing. Each section retains its distinct architectural style and character, providing a rare opportunity to live within different periods of Scottish architectural history.
