By the mid-18th century, Francis Knox (born 1726), son of Francis Knox of Moyne Abbey and Dorothy Annesley, married Mary Gore of Belleek, another heiress connected to Rappa. He resided at the castle and continued the family's tradition of civic duty. Successive generations, including Annesley Gore Knox (1768–1839), his son Annesley Knox (1798–1878), and later Annesley Arthur Knox, maintained the estate and held the High Sheriff office at various times during the 18th and 19th centuries. Transition and decline in the 20th century

Following the Irish War of Independence (1919–1922), the Knox family left Rappa Castle amid the changing political landscape. Ownership transferred to William Gillespie, whose family lived at the castle and raised thirteen children. Due to the financial burden of maintaining the aging structure, the Gillespies constructed a new house nearby, relegating the original castle to ruin. The new residence was occupied until 2001, after which the castle ruins remained unoccupied.
