Puchheim Castle

Puchheim Castle stands as a significant historical and architectural monument in Attnang-Puchheim, Austria. Its origins trace back approximately 800 years to a fortress that once occupied the site, which was completely destroyed by fire in 1585. The castle was subsequently rebuilt in its current form during the 16th century by the Pollheim family, reflecting the Renaissance architectural style prevalent at the time.

Historical evolution and ownership

The castle's history is marked by a series of notable ownerships that shaped its development and function. After the Pollheim family's reconstruction, Count Adam von Herberstorff acquired the estate in 1627. From 1636 to 1760, the Salburg family held possession, followed by the Counts of Fuchs from 1762 to 1838. In 1838, the estate was purchased by Archduke Maximilian d'Este, a grandson of Empress Maria Theresa. His acquisition marked a new chapter, notably when in 1851 he invited the Redemptorist order to establish a monastery within part of the castle. The Bourbon family inherited the castle in 1886, adding to its historical narrative. Today, the castle serves multiple community functions, including housing a regional music school, the tower gallery, the parish centre, and the Maximilianhaus.
