Muqib Tower

Muqib Tower is located within the Liwa oasis in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. This tower is part of a network of fortifications built to protect the precious water resources of the Liwa oasis, a series of small oases forming an arch stretching approximately 110 kilometers along the northern edge of the Empty Quarter (Rub' Al Khali Desert). The oasis has historically been vital for sustaining life in this harsh desert environment.

The tower likely dates back to the 19th century, constructed by the local Bani Yas tribes during a period when the protection of wells and water sources was critical. These tribes erected forts and watchtowers to defend against raids by nomadic groups roaming the desert. While there is no detailed recorded history specific to Muqib Tower, its architectural features and location align with this defensive purpose.

Architectural features and construction

Muqib Tower is distinctive for its round tower design, set within a roughly square enclosure. Unlike many other fortifications in the Liwa region, it is unique in lacking a crenelated wall, which typically provided defensive battlements. The walls are constructed from traditional mud bricks and cob, materials well-suited to the desert climate for insulation and durability.

The tower's ceilings are supported by palm tree trunks, a common local building material, while gypsum was used for decorative and structural detailing. Two rooms are built against the tower; one appears to have functioned as a kitchen, indicating the tower was not solely a military outpost but also a shelter for those stationed there.

The Liwa oasis fortifications network

Muqib Tower is one of nine surviving forts and towers in the Liwa oasis region. Six of these, including Maria Al Gharbiyah Fort, Qutuf Fort, Dhafeer Fort, Mezairaa Fort, Attab Fort, and Al Jabbana Fort, have undergone recent restoration efforts to preserve their historical and cultural significance.

Al Hayla Tower and Umm Hosn Fort remain in ruins, though a new reconstruction of Umm Hosn Fort has been erected nearby. All these fortifications are situated north of the Hameem-Arrada Road (E90), which connects the various Liwa oases, highlighting the strategic importance of this route and the need for protection along it.

Current condition and visitor information

Today, Muqib Tower is freely accessible to visitors, though it is not signposted and lacks interpretive information or exhibits inside. The interior spaces remain bare, offering an authentic glimpse into the tower's original form without modern additions. Despite this, it stands as a compelling example of traditional desert fortifications and is considered a worthwhile destination for those interested in the region's heritage.

The tower's mudbrick construction and simple design reflect the practical needs of desert defense and habitation, emphasizing functionality over ornamentation. Its preservation alongside other Liwa forts contributes to understanding the tribal history and survival strategies in one of the world's most extreme environments.
