Kohlstein Castle

Kohlstein Castle stands on a rocky hillock in the village of Kohlstein, northwest of Tüchersfeld, within the scenic region known as Franconian Switzerland in Germany. It is recognized as the most recently constructed castle in this area, dating back to the late medieval period, around 1486. The castle's origins trace to the late 15th century, likely built by Conz of Hirschaid. It was probably established as an allodial estate of the Lords of Hirschaid, a noble family with regional influence. Destruction and rebuilding in the 16th and 17th centuries

On 23 May 1608, Wolf Philipp Groß von Trockau zu Tüchersfeld was enfeoffed with the castle and lordship, marking a new chapter in the castle's history. The Groß von Trockau family, who from 1658 styled themselves as "zu Kohlstein und Tüchersfeld," undertook comprehensive renovations between 1707 and 1714. During this period, a garden house was likely constructed, which was later converted in 1743 into a combined castle and village chapel.

The present-day structure of Kohlstein Castle primarily reflects 18th-century architectural developments. It comprises a residential building with an attached tower, the latter having undergone renovation in 1890.
