Kestel Castle

Kestel Castle, locally known as Kestel Kalesi, is a historic fortress located in the town of Kestel within the province of Bursa, Turkey. This castle occupies a strategic position on a rocky hill, which provided natural defense advantages. It was originally constructed by the Byzantine Empire during the late 13th or early 14th century, likely under the reign of either Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos (1261-1282) or his successor Andronikos II Palaiologos (1282-1328). The castle's primary purpose was to protect the nearby city of Prusa (modern-day Bursa) from Turkish incursions advancing from the east.

Historical context and military significance

During the period of its construction, the Byzantine Empire was under significant pressure from emerging Turkish powers in Anatolia. The castle formed part of a defensive network aimed at securing the empire's western Anatolian territories. Following the Battle of Bapheus in 1302, a critical defeat for the Byzantines, the fortress eventually fell into Ottoman hands around 1307, marking a shift in regional control and the rise of the Ottoman Empire in western Anatolia.
