Karafrenk Castle, known locally as Karafrenk Kalesi, is a medieval fortress located in a rural hamlet of the same name within the province of Osmaniye, Turkey. Although the original medieval name and detailed history of Karafrenk Castle remain unknown, a document from 1271 references a toll station operated by the Teutonic Knights near Savranda Castle known as the ‘Black Tower.’ It is widely believed that Karafrenk Castle corresponds to this fortification, supported by its construction from dark-colored stones—"kara" meaning "black" in Turkish—and the term "frenk" possibly referring to the "Franks" or Crusaders.

Architectural features and design

The castle exhibits a square layout with four round corner towers, a distinctive architectural style associated with Crusader military engineering. This design contrasts with the typical Armenian military architecture of the region, suggesting that Karafrenk was either built or significantly modified under Crusader influence during the 13th century. The approach involves a challenging 4 km unpaved mountain road from Hasanbeyli, best navigated with a four-wheel-drive vehicle due to its winding and rugged nature.
