Invorio Castle

Invorio Castle, also known locally as Castello di Invorio, is a medieval fortress located in the village of Invorio, within the Novara province of the Piedmont region in northern Italy. Perched on a small hillock overlooking the village, the castle's strategic position offered commanding views of the surrounding landscape, a typical feature for fortifications of its era designed for defense and territorial control.

The castle's origins date back to the early 11th century, with the first documented mention in a record from 1039. It is believed to have been constructed around the year 1000, placing it firmly in the High Medieval period. Initially, the fortress belonged to the Counts of Pombia, a noble family influential in the region during the early Middle Ages. By the end of the 11th century, ownership shifted to the powerful Counts of Biandrate, under whose control Invorio Castle became the center of a substantial territorial domain.

Historical significance and ownership

The castle's history is closely intertwined with the political and military dynamics of northern Italy during the Middle Ages. The Counts of Biandrate held the castle until 1218, when it was sold to the city of Novara. This transfer reflects the growing influence of city-states in the region amid the decline of feudal lordships.

Following its acquisition by Novara, the castle passed into the hands of a branch of the prominent Visconti family, who were significant players in Lombard politics. Historical tradition holds that Ottone Visconti, who would later become the Archbishop and Lord of Milan, was born in the castle in 1207. His nephew, Matteo I Visconti, also a future ruler of Milan, was born there in 1250. These births underscore the castle's importance as a noble residence and political center during the 13th century.

Architectural features and remnants

While the original castle likely featured typical medieval defensive structures such as curtain walls, battlements, and a keep, the surviving element today is primarily the Visconti Tower. This square tower stands approximately 16.5 meters high and is the most prominent remnant of the fortress. The tower was restored and enhanced in the 19th century, reflecting a period of renewed interest in medieval architecture and heritage preservation.

The tower's design is characteristic of medieval military architecture, with thick stone walls and narrow windows for defense. It would have served as a lookout point and last refuge during sieges. The rest of the castle was largely destroyed in the mid-14th century and has not been rebuilt, leaving the tower as a solitary testament to the site's former grandeur.

Destruction and legacy

During the turbulent conflicts of the 14th century, particularly between the Visconti family and the Marquis of Monferrato, control of the Novara area was fiercely contested. Between 1356 and 1358, Galeazzo II Visconti, then Lord of Milan, ordered the deliberate destruction of Invorio Castle to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. This scorched-earth tactic was common in medieval warfare to deny strategic fortifications to rivals.

Since its destruction, Invorio Castle has remained in ruins, with the Visconti Tower as the primary surviving structure. The site is now part of a private garden and is not open to public visitation, which limits direct access but preserves the tower within a controlled environment.

Situated in the Piedmont region, Invorio Castle exemplifies the medieval fortifications that dotted the Italian landscape, reflecting the fragmented political landscape of the time.
