Hrad Návarov

Hrad Návarov stands as a significant medieval rock castle ruin near the municipality of Zlatá Olešnice in the Czech Republic. This castle, built during the medieval period, reflects the strategic importance of hill castles in Bohemian nobility's defensive and residential architecture. Its location above the confluence of the Zlatník stream and the Kamenice river provided natural defensive advantages, making it a formidable stronghold in its time.

Historical background and ownership

Archaeological evidence suggests human settlement in the area dating back to the late 13th century, with the castle itself most likely founded in the mid-14th century. The earliest written record from around 1365 associates Návarov with Adam Heřman of Heřmanice. The initial construction is attributed to Jindřich z Návarova of the Valdštejn family, who took ownership in 1380. Over the following decades, the castle passed through various noble hands, including Jan Čúch of Zásada, a royal marshal under King Václav IV.

In 1469, during the turbulent period of Bohemian conflicts, forces loyal to King Jiřík of Poděbrady seized the fortress from Jan Zajíc of Házmburk. The Smiřický family controlled the castle from 1515 for about a century, until the significant political upheavals following the Battle of White Mountain in 1620. As a consequence, the castle was confiscated in 1622 and granted to Albrecht of Valdštejn, who in turn bestowed it as a fief to Getrude de Lamotte in 1627. This period saw the enforcement of strict Counter-Reformation policies across the estate.

During the Thirty Years’ War, Vincenc de Lamotte defended the castle, but in 1643 it fell to Swedish troops who used it as a base for raids until their withdrawal in 1644. To prevent further occupation, Prague authorities ordered the castle's deliberate destruction shortly after. The castle's stones were repurposed for the nearby Baroque Návarov chateau, which includes a chapel built by Marie Angelika Lamottová z Frintroppu.

Architectural features and layout

Hrad Návarov was designed as a rock castle, integrating natural rock formations into its defensive structures. The castle likely began as a residence without a central tower, relying instead on a robust shield wall for protection. The oldest surviving remains include a thick perimeter wall built directly on a natural rock outcrop in the northern section.

Access to the castle's core was controlled by a gate equipped with a portcullis, traces of which remain visible on the southern side. The main courtyard housed two primary buildings: the western building with two vaulted rooms, one featuring a pointed barrel vault, and the eastern building consisting of two rooms of uncertain extent. Structural repairs are evident where the northern wall collapsed and was replaced with a thinner wall.

A barbican once protected the southern approach, though its walls have vanished. This outer defense controlled entry to the core and an expansive outer ward on the west side, where a platform with a bastion-like projection overlooked the valley. The southern side features a neck ditch and an outer defensive wall that cleverly incorporates the natural rocky terrain, fronted by a partially filled moat.

Following the castle's capture in 1469, an additional outer defensive line was constructed, utilizing natural rock formations and including two semicircular bastions. Access was further restricted by another ditch. A large rock to the west is topped by an unidentified structure, adding to the complex's defensive capabilities.

The castle complex also included a western palace and other southern buildings, though details about their size and function remain limited. Today, the site preserves fragmentary walls and foundations, some stabilized for conservation and public access.

Preservation and public access

After centuries of decline, the remains of Hrad Návarov underwent extensive conservation efforts, culminating in a project completed in 2019. These efforts have stabilized the ruins, allowing visitors to explore the site safely and appreciate its historical and architectural significance. The castle's ruins stand as a testament to medieval fortification techniques and the turbulent history of the Bohemian region.

Cultural and historical significance

Hrad Návarov exemplifies the evolution of medieval hill castles in Bohemia, reflecting changes in military architecture and noble residence design from the 14th to 17th centuries.
