Écotay Castle

Écotay Castle, known locally as Château d'Écotay, is a medieval fortress located in the hamlet of Vieil-Écotay within the Loire department of France. This historic site stands on a rocky spur overlooking the confluence of the Cotayet and Charavan streams, a strategic location that provided natural defenses and control over the surrounding landscape. The castle's origins trace back to the 12th century, although records indicate a noble domain existed here since at least the late 11th century.

Architectural features and construction

The most prominent surviving structure of Écotay Castle is its square keep, which rises approximately 15 meters high and contains four superimposed levels. This keep was initially constructed in the 12th century, embodying the typical defensive design of the High Medieval period. Despite this, the castle was initially a property of the Counts of Forez, a powerful noble family in the region.

Ownership of the castle passed through several noble houses over the centuries. In 1324, the castle transferred to the House of Lavieu, and later, in 1478, to the Talaru-Chalmazel family. These transitions reflect the complex feudal relationships and territorial politics of medieval France. By the 15th century, the castle had gradually fallen into disuse and abandonment, a fate common to many medieval fortifications as military technology and political circumstances evolved.

Later history and preservation

In the 19th century, specifically in 1842, parts of the castle's outer walls were removed to allow for the expansion of the church situated on the eastern side of the rock. This alteration reflects changing community priorities and the diminished military importance of the castle.

Today, Écotay Castle is owned by the municipality of Écotay-l'Olme and is freely accessible to visitors. The site is considered a castle ruin, offering a glimpse into medieval fortification architecture and the historical landscape of the Loire region.
