The origins and early history of Druyes Castle

The site of Druyes Castle has been inhabited since at least the 9th century, with the village of Druyes-les-Belles-Fontaines established well before the castle's construction. The land belonged to the Count of Nevers from 1032, marking its early integration into the feudal territories of medieval France. The castle itself is first documented in the late 12th century, suggesting its construction occurred around this time, likely as part of a wave of castle-building during the reign of Philip II of France.

Architectural features and the Philippian style

Druyes Castle exemplifies the Philippian style of French military architecture, named after Philip II of France, characterized by a robust and compact design optimized for defense. The castle features a square curtain wall with round towers at each corner, a common defensive feature to cover all angles and reduce blind spots. Along three of the curtain walls, there are square towers, with one notably taller tower functioning as the gatehouse, providing a fortified entrance to the castle grounds.

This design reflects the transition from earlier motte-and-bailey castles to more permanent stone fortifications, emphasizing strong walls and towers capable of withstanding sieges and assaults. Notable historical figures and events

In the late 12th century, Druyes Castle became the residence of Peter II of Courtenay, a cousin of Philip II of France by marriage. Peter II is a significant figure in the castle's history due to his role as the elected emperor of the Latin Empire of Constantinople. In 1216, he accepted the crown offered by a delegation of barons and was crowned by the Pope in Rome. Unfortunately, Peter II never reached Constantinople; he was captured in 1217 during his journey through present-day Albania and likely executed around 1219.

Following his death, the castle passed to his daughter, Matilda I, Countess of Nevers, who regularly resided there. The County of Nevers, including Druyes Castle, was inherited through female lines until 1280, after which it passed to the Counts of Flanders. The new owners abandoned the castle, leading to its decline in status and condition.

Military significance and later history

Despite its abandonment by the Counts of Flanders, Druyes Castle retained military importance. It housed a captain and garrison responsible for its defense, particularly during the turbulent period of the Hundred Years' War. Between 1378 and 1384, the castle underwent repairs and had its defenses reinforced to withstand the ongoing conflicts.

Ownership of the County of Nevers and Druyes Castle changed hands multiple times over the centuries. In 1659, Cardinal Mazarin purchased the county, elevating it to a duchy and granting it to his nephew, Philippe Jules Mancini. The last Duke of Nevers sold the castle in 1738 to Louis Damas, Marquis of Anlezy. The Damas family constructed a new castle adjacent to the medieval ruins, which eventually fell into disrepair and disappeared.

By the late 18th century, financial difficulties led to the sale of both castles for demolition. While the newer castle was completely destroyed, Druyes Castle's medieval ruins survived, albeit in a deteriorated state. It was not until the second half of the 20th century that interest in preserving Druyes Castle revived, leading to consolidation and ongoing restoration efforts that continue today.
