Dhayah Fort

Dhayah Fort stands prominently on a conical hill northeast of the city of Ar Rams in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates. This historic site features two mudbrick forts: a smaller upper fort perched atop the hill and a larger lower fort at its base. The upper fort is the primary attraction for visitors due to its strategic location and historical significance.

Ancient origins and strategic location

The area around Dhayah Fort has been inhabited since at least 3000 BC, making it one of the oldest known settlements in the region. Its location was ideal for ancient settlers: a high hill providing natural defense, proximity to an oasis ensuring water supply, closeness to the sea for trade and fishing, and the protective backdrop of the Hajar mountain range. Archaeological evidence suggests a settlement likely existed at the foot of the hill, possibly enclosed by defensive walls, although these have not fully survived.

Architecture and fortifications

The lower fort

The lower fort has a square ground plan and retains the remnants of two towers on its eastern corners: one round tower and one rectangular tower. This fort served as a refuge for the local population during attacks, providing shelter and protection. Its larger size compared to the upper fort indicates its role as a primary defensive structure.

The upper fort

The upper fort is smaller and follows the natural outline of the hilltop. It features two elliptical towers and a perimeter wall enclosing the summit. This fort was not designed for prolonged sieges, as it lacks a cistern or significant water storage. Instead, it functioned as a last defensive position where armed men could hold out while the local population took shelter in the lower fort. The upper fort's design reflects practical considerations of the early 19th century, likely built using the remains of older fortifications.

Historical significance and the 1819 british siege

Dhayah Fort is historically notable for its role in the 1819 British military campaign against the local rulers. During this conflict, British forces launched an attack on the fort, which was the last stronghold of resistance. The British had to transport their heaviest cannon from ships to the hilltop to breach the fort's defenses.
