After a period of irregular habitation spanning almost two generations, the property was revitalized in the early 1950s by Pierre de Bournazel, who inherited the estate from his uncle and godfather, Pierre de Lur-Saluces. Motivated by a deep passion for both the land and its historic buildings, Pierre de Bournazel undertook extensive restoration efforts. He rebuilt the fermentation cellar, replanted the vineyard devastated by frost in 1956, and restored the château’s interiors to their original appearance, preserving the estate's historical integrity.

His dedication extended beyond restoration; Pierre de Bournazel became a prominent figure in Bordeaux's viticultural community. He served as president of the Classified Growth Association of Sauternes and Barsac and founded the Commanderie du Bontemps de Sauternes et Barsac in 1959, an organization devoted to promoting the region's wine heritage. Following his death in 1985, his wife, the Countess de Bournazel, continued these efforts, overseeing further renovations and maintaining the estate’s reputation for excellence with the support of their sons.

Architectural features and estate layout

The château itself is a fine example of Renaissance architecture from the 17th century, characterized by its harmonious proportions and classical detailing. The restoration work respected the original design, focusing on preserving the château’s historic rooms and stonework. These sculptures depict figures from Greek mythology such as Cephalus, Aurora, Cupid, Aphrodite (Venus), Adonis, and Flora, the goddess of flowers and gardens. Other statues symbolize themes related to wine-making, hunting, fishing, and intoxication, emphasizing the estate’s connection to viticulture and leisure.

On the eastern side of the first terrace stands a small theater adorned with figures from the Italian commedia dell'arte, including Pantalone, Scaramouche, and Harlequin. A stairway leads visitors to the second terrace, where statues represent the four classical elements: earth, wind, air, and fire. This artistic program reinforces the garden’s allegorical and cultural richness.

Château de Malle is renowned for producing three prestigious wines within the Sauternes appellation.
