Constructed between 1600 and 1650, this château embodies the architectural characteristics distinctive of the Renaissance period in France, particularly reflecting the transitional style of Louis XIII, which marries both classical and early Baroque elements. The château features a U-shaped design, comprising a main wing facing west and two side wings to the north and south, all interconnected to form a cohesive structure. This layout is typical of the Louis XIII architectural style, noted for its asymmetry and elegant proportions. The main building's façades display an uneven arrangement of windows, with the west side having four windows to the left and three to the right of the main entrance, while the east side, overlooking the private park, has five windows on the right and four on the left. This deliberate dissymmetry adds to the château's charm and historical authenticity.

Surrounding the château are remnants of its agricultural past, including barns, granaries, and stables arranged in a closed square. These outbuildings retain traces of their former use, such as inscriptions of cows' names in a cowshed and a functional stable capable of housing four horses. The attics above the barns are particularly notable for their vaulted ceilings and large oak beams sourced from local forests, with one barn boasting ceilings soaring between 15 to 20 meters, originally intended for storing cereals and grains.

Moats, cellars, and wartime history

The château is partially encircled by watered moats, a defensive feature that also enhances the estate's picturesque setting. Beneath the west and north wings lies an extensive vaulted cellar, historically used for storing food, wine, and the château’s own cider and apple liquor production, which matured in this cool, controlled environment.

Of particular historical interest are the jail cells located in the south-western tower. These four cells have been preserved in their original state, with no renovations undertaken to maintain their authenticity. Small fanlights provide limited light and ventilation, and two of the original jail doors remain intact. These cells were reportedly used during the Second World War to detain prisoners of war, a period that also saw the château occupied by German, English, and French troops. The estate suffered some damage during this time, including the removal of original 17th-century hardwood floor panels by French soldiers for firewood. Inscriptions left by French soldiers in a second-floor bedroom of the north-west tower serve as a poignant historical record of this occupation.

Historical ownership and restoration efforts

The château's ownership history is closely linked to the Reille family. During the French Revolution of 1789, the château was looted, resulting in the loss of many original documents related to its history and estate. It transitioned to a secondary residence for the family by the mid-19th century. A monument at the village entrance commemorates Elisabeth Anjoran, who died in childbirth in 1847, reflecting the personal histories tied to the estate.

After the Second World War, Baron Jean Victor Reille inherited the château and undertook extensive restoration to repair wartime damages. These efforts included installing a new roof, modern plumbing, and electricity, as well as interior remodeling to restore the château's former grandeur. His son, Baron Ghislain Reille, continued these renovations into the 1980s, ensuring the château retained its original Louis XIII style and charm while incorporating modern comforts.

The surrounding park and estate grounds

The château is set within a vast 14-hectare park that offers complete privacy, enclosed mostly by stone walls with a small section secured by wire netting. The park includes approximately 10 hectares of forest with broad alleys ideal for leisurely walks. The remaining grounds comprise over two hectares of grassy areas, half of which are maintained lawns, a one-hectare lake, and a tennis court. Access to the park and château is facilitated by a small courtyard and two portals located on the east and north walls, accommodating modern vehicles.

The estate's barns and granaries not only reflect its agricultural heritage but also demonstrate the scale and self-sufficiency of the property in past centuries. The high vaulted ceilings and robust oak beams in these structures highlight the craftsmanship and resources available locally. Efforts to preserve the château's authentic features are evident in the decision to leave the jail cells unrestored and maintain the visible repairs in the living rooms where original floor panels were replaced.
