Château de Diedendorf stands as a notable example of a Renaissance castle located in the village of Diedendorf, France. The site has hosted a castle since at least the second half of the 15th century, although the original structure was likely destroyed around 1530 during a period of conflict that also devastated the village. The current castle was constructed shortly after 1570 and completed around 1580 by Jean Streiff de Lauenstein, who was granted the estate by Count Jean IV of Nassau-Saarbrücken. This castle remained in the Streiff family until 1722, passing through inheritance disputes and changing ownership multiple times over the centuries.

Historical background and ownership transitions

The castle's early history is closely tied to the noble families of the region. After the destruction of the earlier castle, Jean Streiff de Lauenstein, the bailiff of the Count of Sarrewerden, built the present château, reflecting the architectural and social aspirations of the Renaissance period. The estate stayed with the Streiff descendants until the early 18th century. In 1722, ownership passed to the Münchhausen family through marriage, specifically to Charlotte-Quadt de Lanseron, niece of Otto-Ferdinand Streiff de Lauenstein. A legal dispute arose when Charles Streiff de Lauenstein contested the inheritance, resulting in a partial court ruling in his favor. Eventually, Charles renounced his claim in 1730, allowing the Münchhausen family full ownership. However, the Münchhausens sold the property the same year to Auguste Guillaume de Lüder, the bailiff of Sarrewerden.

Throughout the 18th century, the château changed hands several times, often as part of debt settlements. Notably, in 1753, Charles-Frédéric de Lüder transferred the castle to his overlord, Guillaume Henri de Nassau-Saarbrücken, who sold it in 1763 to Gustave de Geisspitzheim. The property continued to experience rapid ownership changes until the mid-19th century, when Simon Striffler, a prominent landowner and former notary clerk in Lorraine, acquired it in 1862. His family maintained the château until 1941.

Following the death of Simon Striffler's grandchildren in 1966, the property was sold to Richard Clark. Despite the damage, the château remains a valuable heritage site due to its architectural and historical importance.
